Around Broek in Waterland

Wagengouw 66, Broek in Waterland, Nederland

Broek in Waterland is a quiet village of barely 2,500 inhabitants that once rivalled Amsterdam itself. Its winding streets are lined with wooden houses around the Havenrak, a small harbour lake, and the village still feels much as it did in the 17th and 18th century. There is plenty to do from here. Monnickendam, founded by monks in the 13th century, sits ten minutes away on the Markermeer. Volendam and Marken make a natural pair: Volendam with its colourful harbour and traditional costume, Marken a former island with 140 monumental buildings. The Marken Express ferry has been sailing between them for nearly a century. And Amsterdam is a quarter of an hour away.
